Carolyn Smithson Beydler, 74
Carolyn Audrey Smithson was born in Globe, Ariz. on June 14, 1939 to Otis and Louise (Woosley) Smithson. She passed away at the age of 74 on Feb. 25, 2014 in Mesa, Ariz. She was baptized in the Globe LDS Church.
After graduating from Globe High School in 1957, she began working for the Arizona Record selling advertising. In 1959 she married Bobby Beydler. There were three children born into this 23-year marriage.
During that time Carolyn changed employment and went to work for Anderson Tire Company.
She quickly found that a woman clerk selling tires was a real challenge. She met that challenge, however, and later became assistant-manager for the Western States Tire Company, convincing customers she truly knew her stuff.
Carolyn’s love and talent for crafts led her to still another change in jobs when she purchased the Globe Craft Center. There she sold crafting supplies and taught classes as well. A big part of that business was also designing silk floral pieces and decorating for weddings or other special events.
Later she went on to be the owner of The Hang’in Tree Antiques until her retirement. When the grandkids were little, they always liked visiting and “helping Grandma out at the store” during school breaks and summer vacations.
Carolyn liked dancing as well and also gave dancing lessons for line and square dancing. Besides her crafting and dancing talents, she was a very good bowler, seamstress and cook. She especially loved to cook during camping trips. Playing cards and games and reading were also pastimes she enjoyed.
Carolyn was always active in community affairs and managed to find time to contribute and volunteer countless hours to many local projects. She was a hard worker at anything she got involved in. Her one big passion was working towards the organization and construction of the Gila County Fairgrounds.
When this dream started there wasn’t even a building on the property. She was one of the original committee members and was very instrumental in the success of that development coming to pass. Another project credited to Carolyn was her accepted idea to name all the streets in Skyline Drive after the many different cactus.
Carolyn’s wide range of interests in her jobs and hobbies led her to cross the paths of many different people throughout her life.
She will be fondly remembered by many of them and her family.
Preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Norman Smithson and Alma Allen, Carolyn leaves behind her two daughters, Laci Goretcki (Curt) Shelly Niewold (Brian Howard); her son, Tye Beydler (Cheryl); four grandchildren, Amanda Johnson (Nate); Bryan Beydler (Margie); Christopher Goretcki and Matthew Goretcki; and two great-grandchildren, Rhiannon and Zane Johnson. She also has several brothers and sister-in-laws in Globe.
Private memorial services will be held by the family at a later date.
