Harry E. Brown, the 1970 Arizona Daily Sun Citizen of the Year, has died at his home in Berryville, Va.
Brown was a research forester with the U.S. Forest Service in Flagstaff for 13 years before departing for Washington in 1973.
He received the award for his leadership in beautifying Flagstaff’s first shopping center at the top of Humphreys Street off Columbus Avenue.
Brown, with the help of Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, created rock terracing and plantings that turned a barren landscape into a “beauty spot,” in the words of one admirer of Brown’s work.
He was a member and expert adviser to the first Civic Beauty Commission, and he began the work of landscaping the land east of the railroad underpass at Santa Fe Avenue and Sitgreaves Street. He also served as a part-time faculty member in the School of Forestry at Northern Arizona University.
Brown and his wife, Marjory, helped to get the Murdoch Center Day Care started and they were active in Federated Community Church.
