Max Proffitt
Max was born July 10, 1934, in Seymour, Texas, to Virgil and Irene Proffitt. He moved to Brownfield, Texas, as a young boy.
Max graduated from Brownfield High School, where he was captain of the basketball team in 1953. He married his high school sweetheart, Rena Faye Chesshir, who was Homecoming Queen at Brownfield High. Max was a volunteer firefighter and worked for his father-in-law at Herman's cotton gin. He went to Eastern New Mexico University on a basketball scholarship for a time.
He loved fishing at Possum Kingdom Lake. Max and Rena had two children, Rodger and Becky. They moved to Phoenix in 1963 where Max opened Glenfair Auto Supply. Max wanted to move his family to a nice, small town, so he chose Prescott in 1973. He opened Champion Auto Supply on West Gurley Street He also owned and operated other auto supply businesses in Prescott. Max played basketball and softball on Prescott Rec League. He also acquired a passion for golf. Max made many good friends through his fellow business associates and recreational sports.
As his health started to decline, Max and Rena retired to Black Canyon City. Max was a Christian and found solace in his great faith in The Lord.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Rena; his son Rodger; his daughter Becky (Mike) Parrish; two grandchildren, Christina Proffitt-Andrada and Cole Parrish; and three great-grandchildren, Madison, Kelsey and Calieb. He also leaves behind his brother-in-law Glen (Delma) Chesshir; sister-in-law Barbara Richards; nephew Doug North; and niece Glenda Chesshir.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Saturday March 29, 2014, at the Black Canyon City Cemetery. Reception to follow at Albins Community Center. In lieu of flowers, make donations to the Navajo Children's Home, P.O. Box 58, Gallup, NM 87305.
