Silver Creek Mortuary, Taylor, Arizona Newel Vernon Jackson (February 20, 1920 - April 2, 2014) Newel Vernon Jackson, 94, of Clay Springs passed away April 2, 2014. He was born February 20, 1920 in Mesa, Arizona to Jesse and Annie Minerva Hancock Jackson, the tenth of twelve children. After a short stay in Mesa, the family moved briefly to Taylor, Arizona and from there, back to their ranch west of Clay Springs. He grew up enjoying all that goes with the rural farm life. From 1941-1943, he served a full-time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Colorado, Nebraska and New Mexico. After completing his mission, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He served a 2 year tour with the Third Marine Division in the Pacific Theater, to include New Caledonia, Guadalcanal, and Guam. Newel married Ruth Frances Jones on January 5, 1946 in Los Angeles, California and they were sealed in the Mesa, Arizona Temple on January 15, 1946. They made their home in Clay Springs. Newel served faithfully on the local school board and in numerous church callings, including twice as counselor in a bishopric and as ward and finance clerk. He provided for his family by working in the lumber mill and logging industries. He enjoyed gardening, raising farm crops and animals. He also loved to read and write poetry. Most of all, he enjoyed watching his family grow, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved them all and often told them so. Newel was preceded in death by his wife, Frances, daughter, Darlene Jackson Brewer, son, Tony, son-in-law, Everett Brewer Sr., and daughter-in-law, Peggy Moody Jackson, as well as infant grandchildren. He is survived by five sons: Leon (Jolene), Dennis (Iona), Lowell (Tink), Trent (Daphne), Troy (Malita), and daughter-in-law, Margaret Noble Jackson, along with 37 grandchildren, 76 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild and several step-grandchildren. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 12, 2014 in the LDS meetinghouse along highway 260 in Clay Springs with the viewing beginning one hour prior to services. Immediately following services, interment will be at the Clay Springs Cemetery. Silver Creek Mortuary is handling arrangements.
