BURK, Nolan


The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ 04/18/2014 Nolan Burk, 82 of Indio, Calif., died on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, in Cathedral City, Calif. He was born March 1, 1931, to Dan and Florence Burk, the eighth of 11 children. He was born and raised in Eagar. Nolan is survived by his wife, Betty of 55 years; four children: Debbie, Shawn, Robin and David; and 10 grandchildren. He is also survived by his three sisters, Una, Leona and Ravena; and brother Erlan. He served in the the United States Navy during the Korean War, Jan. 11, 1951, to Oct. 29, 1954. For over 47 years, he was an educator with Desert Sands Unified School District, his love for teaching and patience helped start the first-ever Independent Study program at Amistad High School in Indio, Calif. He had many hobbies, which included wood carving, making and designing silver turquoise jewerly, cooking, and collecting watches. He had a warm, giving heart and was eager to help those in need, always with a smile. He will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to have their paths come across this wonderful husband, father and teacher. A graveside service will be held from 10-11 a.m. April 23 at the town of Eagar Cemetery.
