The Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, AZ April 24, 2008, p. A public memorial service is planned for May 9, in honor of former Surprise Mayor Joan Shafer, who passed away earlier this month. The public service will take place at the Surprise Stadium, located at 15960 N. Bullard Avenue at 9 a.m. In lieu of flowers, Mayor Shafer’s family has requested that donations be made to DreamCatcher Park, the city’s ball field designed for athletes with special needs. Shafer considered DreamCatcher Park one of her proudest achievements during her time as mayor. People can make the checks out to “Surprise Sundancers/DreamCatcher Park” and mail them to Community and Recreation Services, 15960 N. Bullard Avenue, Surprise, AZ 85374.
