Michael Allen Nelson, a.k.a. Watchmaker Mike, 64, passed peacefully at home on May 24, 2014, after a long illness from cancer. He was born in Chicago, Ill., on May 15, 1950, to Edwin and Mary Nelson. He moved from Chicago to Prescott in 1976 and married his wife, Joyce, in 1982.
Mike and Joyce owned Mountain Time Watch and Clock Shop in Prescott for 17 years. During this time, Mike added model trains to the store, which reignited a lifelong passion. He was a founding member and past president of the Central Arizona Model Railroad Club. Mike's passion further expanded when he bought the 1946 Santa Fe Coach Car and saved the Santa Fe trestle in downtown Prescott.
Mike was an active member of the Prescott Antique Auto Club for many years. As member of the Maricopa Live Steamers in Phoenix, he was proud to ride the engine he built. Mike enjoyed sharing his train modeling talents with his many fellow railroaders.
Mike was extremely generous with his time and resources, helping behind the scenes with many local nonprofits.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Joyce; his brother Robert Nelson; son Cory (Susan) Ransower; daughter Lisa Ransower; niece Tracy Sokolowski; and grandchildren Jadan and Sarah Rowell and Kendra and Sunny Michael Ransower.
The family wishes to thank their many friends who have loved and supported them throughout the years. Also, a heartfelt thank-you to the Prescott VA and Granite Mountain Hospice.
Mike will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A private party for family and friends will be from 3 to 7 p.m. on June 21, 2014, at the Nelson home.
