Donald E. Weaver, Jr., passed away May 26 at the Hospice of the Valley in Scottsdale. Weaver was born May 4, 1939, in LeHigh County, Bethlehem, PA. He received his BS in Aeronautical Engineering from Tri State University in Indiana, and his PhD in Anthropology from Arizona State University in 1978. He directed the Museum of Northern Arizona’s archaeological program from 1977-81, and served as Curator of Anthropology from 1984-87. Weaver then founded
Plateau Mountain Desert Research, an archaeological consulting firm. A recognized authority on Southwestern prehistoric rock art, Weaver authored numerous books and articles. He served as president of the American Rock Art Research Association from 1990-1994. Weaver personally visited and partially documented more than 600 rock art sites in Arizona. He served as professional advisor and coordinator of the Arizona Archaeological Society Rock Art Recording Field School.
Weaver participated actively in the Flagstaff Picture Canyon Working Group that recorded rock art, placed the site on the National Register of Historic Places, and acquired the site as Flagstaff’s newest Natural and Cultural Preserve. He was exceedingly generous in sharing his time and talents to achieve a permanent record of fragile rock art resources by documenting them. Weaver was awarded ARARA’s Frank and AJ Bock Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009. His many friends and colleagues will miss him greatly, and will work hard to preserve his valuable scientific legacy.
Dr. Weaver is survived by four siblings, Lona (Robert) Allendoerfer of Williamsburg, NY, Robert (Judith) Weaver of Schneckville, PA, Bruce Weaver of Phildelphia, PA, Sharon (Jeffrey Allen) Weaver of Valley Village, CA.
