BRAMAN, Richard G.

Greer’s Mortuary of Sedona, Sedona, Arizona Richard G. Braman December 08, 1953 - June 09, 2014 Richard passed away peacefully with his loving wife by his side in the Village of Oak Creek, Sedona. He was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Don & Sally Braman. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of Minnesota, then magna cum laude from the University of Minnesota Law School. He went on to become licensed as an attorney in Minneapolis and California, serving for decades at the law firm of Gray, Plant, Mooty, Mooty & Bennett with a specialization in antitrust law and complex business litigation. Because of Richard’s love for jazz and music, he opened the jazz club Gabriel’s at St. Anthony Main on the Mississippi river in Minneapolis, featuring Art Farmer & Benny Golson’s Jazztet, to name a few. Named one of the top 50 lawyers over the last 50 years, Richard then decided to create the ultimate think-tank and founded The Sedona Conference, a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) research and educational institute dedicated to the advanced study of law and policy in the areas of antitrust law, complex litigation and intellectual property rights. With Richard’s special sense of humour and tenacious ability to adapt, he created an environment for dialogue with uniquely designed working groups, continuing legal education sessions, conferences, and The Sedona Conference Journal. The work of Sedona Conference has been relied upon by both lawyers and judges throughout the US and Canada. The Sedona Conference is, like the Hopi tradition’s Pathfinder wolf, an effort to find the best path forward as lawyers and judges work together using the magic of Dialogue, moving the law forward in a reasoned and just way. Richard Braman is survived by his wife Margo Braman, sister Sandra Braman and brother-in-law Guy Milford, brother Stuart Braman and sister-in-law Nancy Braman, nephew Jon and Lisette Braman with daughter Naomi, & nephew Dan Braman. Also survived by mother-in-law Madreen Steeves and brother-in-law William Jones Jr. and sister-in-law Jennifer Switzer. Memorial service and burial will take place at Greer’s Mortuary in Sedona, Arizona at 2:00 pm Saturday June 14 with the burial following thereafter. Family and close friends will be meeting at the Braman home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to homeless shelters Sharing & Caring Hands in Minneapolis, MN or Crossroads for Life in Douglasville, GA. Richard, our Pathfinder, will be sorely missed.
