BROTHERTON, Joy Latreece

(Maiden Name: Yell)

Kingman Daily Miner, Kingman, AZ - Published on June 8, 2014 - Joy Latreece Brotherton was born on Oct. 5, 1938, in Gilbert. Joy passed away on May 19, 2014, which brings our deepest sorrow. Joy was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Nettie Yell, and her two sisters, Evelyn Short and Delores Erickson. Joy moved to Kingman in 1963, and we were fortunate to have her for the next 51 years. When Joy was 12 and 13 years old she was preaching in her church. Joy and her family were very close to the Lord and always tried to remember their roots and actions. She trusted and tried to live by His word. Her family moved to Southern California in 1941. She went to school and graduated from high school in 1956. Her family moved to Arizona in 1964. Joy was the Palo Christi School secretary, the only grade school in Kingman at the time, and later became the administrative secretary to the CEO for Mohave County General Hospital. She was very instrumental in the move from downtown to the present Hilltop location of what became Kingman Regional Medical Center. On Aug. 1, 1969, Joy married Charles "Butch" Brotherton. She and her husband started their own business; she kept books and ran the office for many years, until she decided to go into real estate. In 1982, Joy earned her real estate license and joined Century 21- Barbara Ricca Realty, staying there for 30 years. Joy became the 25th president of the Kingman Golden Valley Association of Realtors in 1989. In 2012, Joy was elected to the Mohave County supervisor's position in the newly formed District 4 and that became her primary area of focus. Whatever Joy endeavored, she excelled at and mastered. She was extremely dedicated to her tasks and excelled in all of them. She was loved by all she worked with and her clients were always very loyal. Joy had a passion and extreme determination when she was trying to make something worthwhile. Joy had a saying that she lived by in Kingman and Mohave County: "My roots run deep, but my passion for this community runs deeper." We are going to remember Joy Brotherton for a long time to come. She has left her mark on our community, but even greater she has now left her mark on Mohave County. There will be a memoriam in her honor at Lee Williams Auditorium at 2 p.m. June 19, 2014, in hopes many will share their memories of her and what wonders she performed. Everyone is welcome to come and tell your tales and honor a very special person in our community. If anyone would like to send cards or messages, please send to 1655 N. Sierra Vista Ave., Kingman, AZ 86409. The family would love to hear from you.
