RICHWINE, Earl Melvin


The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona, Wednesday, June 18, 2014 Earl M. Richwine was born Oct. 20, 1922, in Prescott, Ariz., a third-generation Prescottonian, and was Promoted to Glory June 10, 2014, from the VA Medical Center in Prescott. Earl served his country in the United States Army from 1944 to 1945. He was assigned to the 77th infantry division in the Philippines and Ryukyu Island. After being wounded on Okinawa, Earl received three Purple Hearts. Upon returning home to Prescott, he operated the Prescott Laundry and diaper service for over 50 years. He was affectionately known by numerous families as the "diaper man." In 1952, Earl married the love of his life, Alma Bullion. Alma preceded him in death in 1979. Earl served as both mother and father to his children. His children believed he was the best Mom and Dad anyone could ever have. Earl was a lifelong member of The Salvation Army, and held the highest lay rank of Corps Sergeant Major for over 40 years. He was also the Band Master and Youth Sergeant Major. Earl played in the brass band until after his 91st birthday. Earl loved serving his Lord in all ways, but his true love was working with the youth. Earl taught countless young people to play brass instruments and led many to Christ. Earl also volunteered his time at the VA hospital as the Cookie Man on the fourth Sunday of the month for over 30 years. Earl is survived by his two children, Leah Richwine (Jeff Gavroy) and Arthur Richwine; and grandson Josh Gavroy. He is also survived by his beloved cats, Mr. Friendly and Stormy. Earl will be remembered as the Laundry Man, Cookie Man, YPSM Man, CSM Man, Band Master Man, Man of God, loving, gentle and thinking of others before himself. Viewing will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 20, 2014, at the Hampton Funeral Home, 240 S. Cortez St., Prescott, Ariz. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2014, at the Salvation Army, 237 S. Montezuma, Prescott.
