Jessie Katherine McAuley

Katherine McAuley peacefully went home to be with the Lord on June 24, 2014 in Winslow, Arizona, she was born in Carey, Texas on December 14, 1916.
Katherine and her husband, H.E. McAuley moved to Winslow in 1939 and their son John, was born in 1945. Prior to going back to school, she was very active in community groups, served as president of The Baptist Women’s Missionary Society; the Junior Women’s Club; Chapter N, P.E.O. and Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority. She also loved to travel all over the United States and Europe.
In 1956 she decided to return to school and received her Master’s Degree from Northern Arizona University and taught in Winslow High School for 25 years. Many of her students enjoyed her dry wit and her dramatic interpretations or literature, especially her enactment of the witches’ scene at the beginning of Macbeth. She was nominated for Arizona Teacher of the Year in 1976.
Since her retirement in 1982 she remained in Winslow and continued to be an active member of the First Baptist Church, Delta Kappa Gamma and in January 2014 celebrated 70 years as a member Chapter N, P.E.O. She loved reading, caring for her beloved dog and working in her garden.
Katherine is survived by her son, John McAuley of Roanoke, Virginia; niece Linda Huckabee of Morton, Texas and nephews Mike and Marty Williams of Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband, H.E. in 1979.
Katherine “Katy” will missed by many friends who will always remember her for her sincere concern for them, her wit and beautiful blue eyes. She touched the hearts of many in Winslow and will never be forgotten.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Greer’s Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be on Monday, June 30th from 6:30 to 8:00 PM at Greer’s Mortuary Chapel.
