Morris "Morey" Matsas, age 88, passed away peacefully, with his family
at his side, on Wednesday, June 30, 2014. He was born February 8, 1926
in Kastoria, Greece to Solomon and Lavra Matsas.
At age 17, when the Nazis invaded northern Greece during WWII, he
escaped to the mountains and fought in the Underground until war's end.
His entire immediate family perished at the Auschwitz concentration
camp. Upon returning from the mountains, he began life again, serving in
the Greek army, starting a family, and establishing a dry-goods store in
Kastoria. He immigrated with his wife and first two children to Los
Angeles, Calif. in 1955, and worked as a warehouse manager. He and his
wife retired to Bullhead City, Ariz. in 1989, where he began a new
career in real estate.
He is survived by his wife, Rachel; daughter, Laura (David, deceased);
sons, Solomon (Brenda) and Albert (Susan); and grandchildren, Elias,
Rebecca, and Alexander.
He was loved greatly, and will be missed greatly, by his family.
The family thanks the wonderful people of Hospice Compassus for their
help and compassion.
