Hazel was born to Leota and Wilber Bessett on December 11, 1942, in Ferndale, WA. She moved to Tucson, AZ in 1945, and had one son, Robert E. Bessett. Hazel has one sister, Marilyn Peterson (deceased), and two brothers, Larry Bessett (deceased), and John Bessett and wife Juanita, from Rio Rico, AZ. Hazel moved to Show Low around 1979.
