County Leader Dies At Home
One of Prescott's most beloved citizens, Henry John Suder, 88, died last night in the Pioneer Home. An Ohioan by birth, Suder cam to Prescott in 1890. As a young man he plunged enthusiastically into the governmental and fraternal life of the community and served in many capacities with distinction.
He was, for example, the only surviving member of the board of supervisors which built the courthouse here. He served as superintendent of the Yavapai County hospital from 1930 through 1934. Suder also worked for the state highway department, and was a long-time employe of the original Goldwater store located where the Studio theater is now.
His outstanding contribution to fraternal life here and state-wide was through the International Order of Odd Fellows. He had been a member in Marietta, Ohio and transferred his membership upon arrival in Prescott.
He went through all of the offices of the Arizona Lodge Number 1, and became Grand Master in 1907. At the 25th Annual Session, in Phoenix, in 1908, Suder was acclaimed for the gain in membership of the lodge of 456 members. The Prescottian also promulgated the plan of assessing members for the Odd Fellows and Rebekah's home in Safford, which put it on a secure basis.
Henry Suder died after a month's illness. He entered the Pioneer's home in July 1957. He is survived by his wife, Cora Ann, with whom he celebrated a golden anniversary in January 1951.
He is also survived by a son, Charles Suder, an executive in the Safeway Stores, New York City; by sisters, Mrs. J. A. Crum, Phoenix; Ann Suder, Marietta, Ohio; a grandson, Charles H. Suder, Jr., of Littleton, Colo.
Local relatives are George S. Hill, a nephew, and Mrs. Louisa Geimer, a niece. There are also three nieces in Phoenix, Mesdames: Dorothy Haire, Gladys Fleming and Marjorie Hepworth.
Visitation period will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services are Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Ruffner chapel with the Rev. D. C. Trimble presiding. The services will be followed by an IOOF graveside service with burial in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.
