Greer’s Mortuary of Winslow, Winslow, Arizona Franklin Dodd Greer March 13, 1941 - August 08, 2014 Franklin Dodd Greer, 73, passed away peacefully in his home in Heber, Arizona on August 8th, 2014 after a 5+ year battle with Multiple myeloma cancer. He was born in St. Johns, Arizona, on March 13th, 1941, the 3rd of four children to the late Harold and Mildred “Millie” Greer. He had an adventurous childhood growing up in this small farming and ranching town. He was taught the ethics of hard work on the family farm by helping his father with the various duties on the ranch. He graduated from St. Johns High School in 1959. He attended Northern Arizona University, where he obtained his degree in Education. It was there that he met his sweetheart, Dawna Rose Burnham (Greer). Being perfect for each other, their marriage was sealed for time and all eternity in the Mesa LDS Temple on April 16th, 1965. Frank loved to see the development of the children he educated. He taught the 5th grade for 6 years in Lakeside, AZ. He moved his family to Heber, AZ where he was hired as the Principal at Capps Elementary School. After 17 years at Capps, he became the first Principal of Mogollon High School where he worked and served for 3 years. He then served as the Superintendent of the Heber/Overgaard Unified School District for 8 years. During his “retirement” he spent 3 years back in the classroom; he truly loved to be among the children. He spent many years coaching Jr. High football and basketball and High School girls basketball. He also played a prominent role by lending his administrative expertise in the startup and growth of the Northern Arizona Vocational Institute of Technology (NAVIT) where he served on the Board of Directors until June 2014. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had the opportunity to serve in various capacities throughout his life including; Missionary in the New England States Mission from 1960-62, Sunday School Teacher, Bishop of the Heber 2nd Ward, Taylor Stake High Councilman, Regional Employment Office missionary and worker in the Snowflake Arizona LDS Temple until his health prohibited him from serving longer. He was compassionate and very mindful of the individual who stood in need, often helping them quietly on their way on his own dime. Frank loved life! It was evident by his associations with his family and friends. Wherever he went he either knew a friend or made a friend. He loved family gatherings and reunions and time spent with his brothers and nephews going camping, to ball games and on hot dog runs. He enjoyed fishing, cutting and gathering wood and cooking up a mean dutch oven meal in the outdoors or at community events. Traveling was also a favored thing to do with his wife Dawna throughout their married life. In his 25 years as a high school football and basketball referee, he enjoyed his association with many athletes, coaches and fans. He wasn’t afraid to blow his whistle or throw an overzealous fan out of a game. Many thought his refereeing techniques brought as much entertainment to the game as the game itself. Survivors include his children, Wendy (David) Skousen of Lakeside, AZ; Lance (Shannon) Greer of St. George, UT; Kristal (Jason) Joy of Salt Lake City, UT; and Kandra (Jared) Owens of Cottonwood, AZ.; 15 ½ grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Mildred Greer; his wife Dawna and his son Dallin. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 16th, 2014, at the Heber Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 1858 Highway 260. The viewing will be held from 8:30 am to 10:30am prior to the commencement of the funeral services. He will be laid to rest at the Heber/Overgaard Cemetery immediately following the services. In lieu of flowers, Frank’s desire would be for you to make a donation to the “Franklin and Dawna Greer Memorial Scholarship Fund” which will be used to provide a Mogollon High School 2015 graduating senior a scholarship for educational purposes.
