Carol Sigl Ebert died Aug. 9, 2014, at Granite Gate Senior Living in Prescott, Ariz. Carol J. Franzel was born in Milwaukee, Wis., in May 1929 to Richard and Alfretta Franzel. She started piano lessons as a young child and by age 7 was giving concerts. She played on the radio in the 1930s and '40s. She also loved her bicycle and the Milwaukee Braves. Carol majored in chemistry at Downer College in Milwaukee and then worked on her master's degree at UW-Madison. Afterward she taught chemistry at UW-Milwaukee Extension for several years.
Carol loved letters and corresponded with many people her entire life (her earliest was a girl she met when she was 5 years old on the New Jersey shore). She often talked of sitting on the pier at Green Lake in the 1940s waiting for the mail boat to come to pick up the letters she wrote. She avidly wrote letters up until 2011, when her illness began.
While at UW-Madison she met Ken Sigl (her first husband) and Louis Ebert (her second). Carol married Kenneth L. Sigl in 1954, moved to Eau Claire where Ken practiced law (Herrick and Sigl) and they had three daughters. Ken died tragically in December 1964.
In 1968, Carol married Louis V. Ebert III and moved to the Washington D.C. area with her children. Carol and Lou had a daughter, Barbara. Lou's job took him all over the world - and so the family followed, living in Rhode Island, Zambia, Brazil and Virginia. Carol and Lou had many adventures in the countries they lived in and saw several of the world's Seven Natural Wonders.
In 1980, they moved to Prescott, Ariz., and remained there the rest of their lives. In retirement they were RVer's and traveled extensively through the Western United States, especially loving the "Four Corners" area. Carol traveled to four continents, at least 13 countries and 46 states. Carol was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and attended many games and watched them all on TV. She was an avid photographer (her grandfather was a professional photographer) and took thousands of pictures, slides and movies during her lifetime. She leaves this legacy to us, her survivors.
She is survived by four daughters, Jenny Ebert of Eau Claire, Susan and Ken Kissel of Prescott, Laurie Ebert of Phoenix and Barbara and John Bruce of Prescott. She also is survived by four grandchildren, Kenneth and Jessica Kissel, Aydan and Jack Bruce.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and both of her husbands.
Carol will be buried in Eau Claire, Wis., with her first husband.
A Memorial service will be at 3 p.m. on Aug. 31, 2014, at Granite Gate in Prescott, Ariz. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Prescott Alzheimer's Association.
