He served in the United States Army from 1956-1958 and received a Certificate of Achievement for his duty in support of "Operation Mercy" when he was stationed at Camp Kilmer, N.J., in 1957. He was a past member of the Sunrise Lions Club, Prescott Jaycees, B.P.O.E. Lodge 330 and Mile High Square Dance Club.

He is survived by his wife Mary; children Rochelle, Irene, Bruce and Steve (Kelly); grandchildren Asher, Jamie, Trenton, Ashley (Jesse), Clinton (Shanna), Cole, Jake, Cody and TJ; 14 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews; and sisters-in-law.
Hampton Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements and adds these comments: During the loss of the 19 Prescott Hotshots, Russ was called on to assist with the work at the Arizona Pioneers Home Cemetery. His background in cemetery work was very valuable. He donated all of his time and requested that no compensation be made to him. His son Steve Handley is the owner of Handley Precast Systems and they provided vaults to the families at no charge.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his name to AFCCA Foundation for Children, 2473 S. Higley Road, Suite 104, PMB 309, Gilbert, AZ 85295 for checks or https://azfoundationforchildren.org/donate.
A Celebration of Life will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, 2014, at the Meals on Wheels room at the Rowle Simmons Adult Center in Prescott.
