Tucson Daily Citizen, Tucson, Arizona July 28, 1945, page 2 B. R. Hatcher, 60, Mining Engineer, Dies Funeral Services Will Be Here Tuesday; Died In San Diego Native Arizonian Burrell R. Hatcher, 60, of Tucson, died yesterday afternoon after a years' illness, in San Diego, Calif. The body is being returned here for funeral services and burial at 10 a. m. Tuesday. Mr. Hatcher was a prominent Arizona mining engineer. He graduated from the University of Arizona in 1909. After 21 years' service with the American Smelting and Refining company, Mr. Hatcher retired December, 1931, as the company's southwestern mining manager. The first annual service award of the Arizona Alumni association was awarded to Mr, Hatcher in 1941, "For unselfish service, tireless devotion and outstanding contributions to the university, community and his profession." He was formerly superintendent of the Campo Bonito Mining company near Oracle for some years. Later he became mill superintendent of the Y-P Mining company, then until the outbreak of World War I he was in partnership with the late D. E. Andrus and Miles Carpenter. During the first war he served as a first lieutenant in the engineering corps. Returned From War After the war, in 1919, Mr. Hatcher returned to Tucson and joined the American Smelting and Refining company. In 1930 he became manager of the southwestern department of the company. He was born in Prescott, June 13, 1885. As a student at the university he was active in athletics. He competed in baseball, basketball, football, track and tennis, twice captain of the baseball and track teams and for one year was captain of the football squad. The university conferred a professional mining degree upon him in 1937 for his contributions to his profession. For many years ho served as director of the Arizona section of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. He was a member of Epes Randolph lodge No. 32 of the Masons, and of El Rio Golf and Country club. Mr. Hatcher Is survived by his wife, Mrs. Estella Goltree Hatcher; two sons, Capt, B. R. Hatcher, Jr., stationed in Birmingham, Ala.; Capt. Wilbert Hatcher, of Tucson, recently retired from the Army after battle action in Europe; three grandchildren; Will Hatcher, Nogales, and Charles Hatcher of California; and a sister, Mrs. Norman Scanland, El Monte, Calif.
