Greer’s Mortuary of Winslow, Winslow, Arizona Samuel Rice April 20, 1921 - August 28, 2014 On the afternoon of August 28, 2014 Samuel Rice passed away in his home at the age of 93. Samuel leaves behind Patsy, his wife of 64 years, two sons Charles W. Rice and Thomas O. Rice; two grandchildren and four great grandchildren. During WWII at the age of 22, Samuel Rice was awarded the Silver Star medal and a Presidential Unit Citation. As a gunner’s mate second class, Samuel silenced two enemy machine gun nests on the island of Sicily. Because of his total disregard for his own safety, other vessels were able to beach allowing troops to disembark and conquer the island. From 1952-1962 Samuel had a local business, Sam’s Neon Service, here in Winslow, then he went to work for the AT&SF railroad until he retired in 1982. Even though Samuel lived a long full life, he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
