Mel Oliverson passed away Tuesday, Sept. 16, in Prescott, Ariz. Born in Hemet, Calif., in 1930 to Emmaline and Elmer Oliverson, Mel worked summers in the Forest Service in Idyllwild, Calif., before joining the Navy. As a naval electronic specialist, he achieved the rank of First Class Petty Officer and served in the Korean War.
After studies at California State Polytechnic, Pomona, Mel began a 35-year career in the defense and aerospace industry as an engineer and executive, and later as a consultant based in Phoenix, Ariz. Acting on a commitment to service and civic duty, Mel served as a Yavapai County Sheriff's Office Search & Rescue volunteer for 20 years. He was recognized by the All-Arizona Search & Rescue Deputy Sheriff's Association as Volunteer Posse Man of the Year in 1997, and the as All-Arizona Emergency Management Volunteer of the Year in 2002.
Mel is survived by his wife Peggy, son Michael, daughters CJ and Cathy, and grandchildren Isabel, Bryce and Jacob. The family will hold a private memorial. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Yavapai County Jeep Posse, P.O. Box 12273, Prescott, AZ 86304.
