SHIPMAN, Betty

The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona, Sunday, October 05, 2014 Betty Shipman was born March 25, 1923, in Joplin, Mo., to James Patrick Cleator and Wilmetta Pearl Hunt. She grew up in Cleator, Ariz. (named after her father), and graduated from Prescott High School. She graduated University of Arizona, Masters at TWU. Betty met Harrison Shipman in Tucson in 1941, while Betty was a senior at the University of Arizona. They kept in touch during World War II and Betty was a stewardess with American Airlines until they married April 12, 1946, in Las Cruces, N.M. After Washington, DC and the Carolinas, they settled in Fort Worth in 1956. Betty was active in Kiwis, Woodhaven Women's Club and Meadowbrook and First United Methodist Church. She taught fourth grade at Eastern Hills Elementary for many years and then was a traveling school librarian. Along with Harry's participation with the Moslah Shrine Patrol, Royal Order of Jesters Court No. 32, they were members at the Glen Garden, Colonial and Woodhaven Country Clubs, Petroleum Club and Carousel Dance Club. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, Harrison "Ship" and brother Tom Cleator. Survivors include son Jimmy Shipman and wife Jana; daughter Jeannie Hammann; grandson Peter Hammann; granddaughters, Jacy Shipman and Nicole Cox; Nicole's husband Jeremy Cox; and great granddaughter Ella Cox.
