Death Claims Jos. Roberts At Age Of 60
Joseph I. Roberts, pioneer businessman of Prescott and one of Yavapai
county's most respected citizens, died last night at 9 o'clock
following an illness which extended over a long period of time. Mr.
Roberts was 60 years of age and had lived in Prescott 45 years, coming
to this city with his parents when he was a boy.
He established the O.K. Meat Market which he ran for about 25 years,
selling out to Henry Hartin about five years ago to move to Pasadena
for his health. Mr. Roberts owned the Williamson Valley Land and
Cattle company, and served as sheriff of the county for one term. He
was active in civic and public affairs and took a keen interest in
politics.
Born in Australia, near Melbourne, Jane 2, 1866, he came to the United
States with his parents in 1870. The located in Junction City, Kansas,
where they lived for five years. In 1875, he came to Prescott with his
parents and made his home in this city until about five years ago when
he went to Pasadena for his health. He returned from the coast several
months ago to look after his business interests.
Mr. Roberts was educated in the Prescott public schools. After
graduating from high school, he was an employee of the Bashford -
Burmister company for about a year. He left this company to go into
business for himself and established the O.K. Meat market.
The deceased is survived by the widow, who lives at Simmons, and two
brothers, Ed Roberts of Prescott, and John R. Roberts of Parker.
Funeral arrangements have not been accomplished and will be announced
later.
