Martha Frieda Weik-Cormell
Martha Frieda Weik-Cormell, 84, entered into eternal rest on Oct. 28, 2014, in Blythe, California. She was born Dec. 7, 1929 in Hereford, Arizona and graduated from Bisbee High School in Bisbee, Arizona in 1946.
She worked alongside her parents and siblings on the family farm while growing up in southern Arizona. Martha attended Lee College in Cleveland, Tennessee and Good Samaritan College of Nursing and Health Science in Phoenix, Arizona. She went on to receive a nursing degree and later a bachelor's degree in administration. She began a 20-year nursing career at Copper Queen Community Hospital in Bisbee, followed by Sierra Vista Community Hospital in Sierra Vista, Arizona. During this time she was united in marriage to her beloved husband of 57 years, Leland Thomas Cormell.
Leland was a young service member in the United States Army stationed at nearby Fort Huachuca. Martha met Leland when he began attending a young adult Sunday school class taught by her at the Sierra Vista Church of God where her father, John Weik, was the founding pastor. Martha also worked as a register nurse at Tempe Community Hospital in Tempe, Arizona, before moving to Blythe, California, in 1970 with her husband and children.
Her husband, Leland, accepted a teaching position at Blythe Junior High School and she continued her nursing carrier at Palo Verde Hospital in Blythe for another seven years. Martha had a passion for working with newborns in the labor and delivery department. Eventually Martha and Leland ventured into several business opportunities including multiple service stations, a small motel and AAA Air Conditioning in Blythe.
Martha is survived by her sons, Leland Cormell Jr. (DeVonda), Quentin Cormell (Tanya), Shaffer Cormell (Melissa), and Robert Cormell (Catrina); her daughters, Martha Ramirez (Israel), Ruth Wilson (Wayne), and Kelly Cormell-Drapeau (Johnny); her grandchildren, Rachel Adamscormell (Gary), Leland Cormell III (Karina), Chad Cormell (Marcel), Jesse Newton (Naomi), Derek Cormell, Ariel Ramirez, Cortney Cormell, Caleb Ramirez, Nicole Wilson, Naomi Cormell, Christiana Cormell and Christian Cormell; her great grandchildren, Trinity Cormell, Joel Newton, Brody Cormell and Noah Adamscormell; and her embraced children, Lori Aldridge, Jimmy Green and Dawn Robinson.
Martha was preceded in death by her husband Leland Cormell; her parents, John and Alma Weik; her brothers, John and Alfred Weik; and her sister, Ruth Isaacson.
A Celebration of Life will be Oct. 31, at 2 p.m. at Frye Chapel, 633 N 7th St, Blythe, with Pastor Ruth Wood officiating.
A graveside service will be Nov. 1, at 2 p.m., at the Bisbee-Lowell Evergreen Cemetery located at 9 Old Douglas Rd, Bisbee, Arizona, where she will be laid to rest alongside her husband Leland.
