SMITH, Horace Wesson (HW)


The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona, Sunday, November 23, 2014 Horace Wesson (HW) Smith passed away the day before his 95th birthday on Nov. 7, 2014, at his home in Peeples Valley, Arizona. "Smitty" was the chief engineer in Bagdad, Arizona, for 30 years before his retirement in 1982. He considered supplying a reliable source of water for both the town and the mine was one of his most significant accomplishments. He served as chairman of the Yavapai County Industrial Development Authority for more than 25 years. Smitty was a 32nd degree Mason for 60 years, and active member of the Order of the Eastern Star. He is survived by his daughters Moira (Jeff) Carlton of Kingman, Arizona; Sheila Smith of Peeples Valley; grandchildren Erick, Scott, Shannell, Caitlin and Kyle; and sister Lois Sherrer of New Jersey. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Nelly, his son Scott, and brothers Roy, George and Fred Schmidt. Services were on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2014, in Prescott, Arizona. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in his memory to the George Washington National Masonic Memorial in Alexandria, Virginia. Information provided by survivors.
