John Allen Smith, 72, was born in October 1942. John passed away Nov. 29, 2014, after a long battle with cancer. He was an Arizona native who grew up in the Tolleson area. He graduated from Tolleson Union High School and ASU.
John served in the U.S. Army during the 1960s, part of the time as an Honor Guard at Arlington National Cemetery, guarding the tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
In the early 1970s, John was a cameraman for Channel 12 TV. In 1974, he went to work at Channel 5 KPHO TV. He started as director, then production manager, and finally director of operations, holding that position until his retirement in 2001. During his tenure at KPHO, he won numerous awards for his creative writing and an advertising Emmy. After 10 years in retirement, he went to work for G4 Secure Solutions.
John is survived by his wife Betti of Glendale; his sister Marilyn Fuller of Prescott; and many cousins. He was loved and will be greatly missed.
Private cremation has taken place. Suggested donations may be made to The Arizona Humane Society.
