Charlotte ‘Lottie’ Adel Altseimer passed away from age related causes on Saturday, November 29, 2014 in her home in Flagstaff surrounded by her three adult children, J.C and Christine Altseimer and Wendy Hamilton.
Charlotte was born on January 28, 1918 in Chicago. She grew up on Long Island, the oldest of five children and was the last surviving sibling.
Charlotte had both Dutch and English ancestry. Her grandmother was a registered member of the Society of Old Plymouth Colony Descendants, the National Society of New England Women, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the National Society of the Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims making Charlotte a descendent of families in founding American colonies.
She worked initially as a newspaper reporter. But she eventually moved to California and worked as a librarian at the Cal Tech Library and later at the Sacramento Sisters of Mercy Girls School Library. Following a move to New Mexico she held library positions in the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory Library and the San Ildefonso Pueblo Library.
She met and married her husband John Altseimer while working at the Cal Tech Library. They were married 64 yrs and shared a love of the mountains, hiking, travel, their children’s lives, and their mutual interests in books, technology, and genealogy among many other pursuits.
After Lottie developed macular degeneration, she stopped hiking but together they never lost their love of nature. Charlotte studied social work and library science graduating from the College of Santa Fe. She was the oldest member of her graduating class at 65 years of age.
In addition to her three children, Charlotte leaves behind Wendy’s husband, Lee, her two adult grandchildren Lucas and John Hamilton (and wife Jannah Hamilton), and many extended family members.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to Hospice Compassus of Flagstaff (1000 N. Humphreys St.).
A remembrance ceremony will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at 10:30 am in The Peaks Lodge, 3150 North Winding Brook Road.
