Raymond Edward Miller passed away at the age of 88 at the Margaret T. Morris Center in Prescott, Arizona, on Jan. 13, 2015.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Virginia Miller; son Tony Miller who lives in Columbus, Ohio; and daughters Lisa Miller and Christina Taylor of Orange, California.
Ray was born in Santa Ana, California. He was the only child of Ernest and Helen Skaggs Miller, and attended grade and high school in Santa Ana. In 1944, Ray joined the U.S. Army Air Force. He attended Oregon State University before assignment in the Philippines and later Japan, by which time World War II had ended.
Returning to the U.S., Ray attended Stanford University, receiving his B.S. degree in geology. He joined the U.S. Geological Survey, with assignments in Iceland, Grand Junction and Denver, Colorado.
It was in Denver that he met his wife-to-be, Virginia Moore, who also worked for the U.S. Geological Survey. Soon after marrying, they took an assignment to Lahore, Pakistan, in the foreign aid program from 1955 to 1957. His work involved exploration of ground water geology. He also taught a class in his field at the University of Lahore.
Ray and Virginia's son, Tony, was born in Lahore in 1956. Returning to the U.S. in 1957, Ray continued his work in geophysics for the Geological Survey in Sacramento, California. Their daughters, Lisa and Tina, were born in this city. In 1965, another two-year foreign assignment took the family to Maiduguri, Nigeria. Back at home and still with the Geological Survey, Ray worked as a hydrologist in Garden Grove, California, until his retirement in 1976.
In 1988, Ray and Virginia moved to Prescott, Arizona, where Ray enjoyed golfing and bridge. Ray's hobby was the collection and history of antique postcards of Yavapai County, on which he wrote a book featuring 200 pictures, which was published by Arcadia Publishing.
Contributions in Ray's memory may be made to the Margaret T. Morris Center, 878 Sunset Ave., Prescott, AZ 86301. There will be no services.
