Dorothy Dalice (Groves) Tomerlin, 84, of Miami, Ariz. passed away Jan. 19, 2015. She was born Aug. 20, 1930 to Sy and Inez Groves.
In 1948, she was the first female to win the State Single Tennis Championship for the Miami Vandals that she loved. That same year, she married Leon Tomerlin on Oct. 17.
Dorothy was active in her community and church. She served happily on the Miami School Board and as a volunteer for Arizona Literacy, and always helped wherever she could.
Golfing, tennis and spending summers in Greer, Ariz. brought her joy. However, being with her family and friends gave her the greatest pleasure. When she was unable to see or be with them, she would keep in contact with letters and phone calls: always having a kind word, a positive outlook to share, and no-nonsense advice. She enjoyed life, had fun, and found the positive in whatever happened, and never complained.
She was a caring wife and mother, a loving grandmother, and a beloved friend by many. Although she will be dearly missed, her life teachings and example have greatly enriched and blessed those who knew her best.
Preceded in death by her husband and son, Ralph.
Survived by her children, Richard, Randy (Beverly) Tomerlin and Janet (Brian) Mullaney; nine grandchildren, Donnie, Jay, Terpa, Sadie, Sy, Ravi, and Sumita Tomerlin and Brett and Jennifer Mullaney; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were held Jan. 22, 2015 at the First Presbyterian Church in Globe.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church.
