Marie White Quay, 80, of Whiteriver died surrounded by her loving family Feb. 9, 2015, in Mesa. The great-granddaughter of Chief Alchesay A1, she was born June 1, 1934, to the late Marion and Annie (Pope) White in North Fork.
A devout Christian, Marie loved to travel all over the Southwest attending revivals and church services of all kinds. She was well known throughout the Apache, Navajo, San Carlos and as far away as the Canoncito (New Mexico) reservations for her strong faith and devotion to her Lord and Savior. She loved to take her family with her on her many church travels, and, because of her, they are all very religious.
Her many hobbies included watching her grandchildren play softball, cooking, traveling and spending as much time as she could with her family. She was very proud to have worked for the Home Extension, helping the tribe reservation wide, baking, canning and making the old “Apache food.” Her last employment was for FATCO as a stick person.
She is survived by her loving husband, Slim Quay of Whiteriver; daughters Marjorie (Robert) Romero of North Fork, Valerie (Raymond) Burnette of Whiteriver, Genevive Lupe of Whiteriver, Arizona and Vonda (Marcus Sr.) Bonito of North Fork; son Mark (Molly Zahgotah) Quay of Whiteriver; granddaughter Thomascita Cosen of Whiteriver; 24 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nephew Rupert White of Whiteriver; and many extended family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by daughters, Jodi and Andrena Quay; son Jerome Kasey, Jr.; grandsons Myron Bonito and Elijo Hill; great-grandson Santiago Colelay; and brothers Albert and Robert White.
A one-night wake will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, at her residence, 614 N.1st Ave., in Whiteriver. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, at the Canyon Day Miracle Church in Canyon Day followed by the interment in the Baha Springs Cemetery in North Fork.
