Andrew Hartman Mettee, 89, of Prescott, Arizona, passed away on Feb. 16, 2015. Mettee was born in Baltimore on March 6, 1925, where he attended elementary and high school. He also completed a course in hospital administration via Continuing Education from Columbia University in New York.
Mettee was a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Navy as Hospital Corpsman attached to the Marine Corps (FMF), for four and a half years. After VJ Day, he volunteered for Operation Crossroads and witnessed the detonation of two atom bombs at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands. Later he received 100 percent permanent disability from the Veteran Administration for overexposure to ionized radiation.
Mattee worked many years in several hospitals in West Virginia, Florida, Arizona, Nevada and California as an X-Ray and Laboratory Technician and hospital administrator. After retirement, he became a licensed hearing aid dispenser in Arizona and California. He was President of the Nevada Hospital Association from 1963 to 1964.
Mettee was the father of six children, George A. and Michael L. of California, Thomas J., Mary E., Ellen I., and Andrew H. of Arizona, all survivors. He is also survived by a sister, Mary E. Salchunas of Baltimore, Maryland, the home of the Mettee name since 1785.
Mattee was a member of the Veterans Home of California in Yountville from February 1997 to Sept. 30, 2012 and served as the Delegate at large on the Allied Council.
Mattee was a devout Catholic. Your prayers are requested for the repose of his soul. He was a perpetual member of Benedictine Mass Association.
