Gilbert C. Madrid, 88 years old, passed in his home on March 9, 2015. He was also known as “Copper” and was a very loving, caring father and husband. Gilbert was a hardworking man. He retired from Inspiration Mine and City Service. Later on he had many different jobs. He worked at the forest service also as a dog catcher and part time dispatcher and as a people greeter at Walmart.
Copper was a marathon runner. He carried the torch for the Olympics. He would run to the “Top of the World” then back to Miami, then go to work eight hours on his feet.
He also served in WWII as a gunner’s mate. He was aboard the USS Massachusetts and the USS Idaho. His ship was torpedoed. He was a true soldier, a true man and a true friend. That was Copper Madrid.
Copper was loved and will be missed by his family and friends that survive him: his wife, Suzy; son, Gil (Susan); daughter, Bonnie and stepson, Rick. He is also survived by his brother, Rudy; granddaughters, Michelle, Selina, Jeanette and Lori; step-granddaughters, Tori and Alisha; grandsons, Chaz, Sammy, Paul, Steve, Kevin and TJ; 13 great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.
Copper was preceded in death by his beloved Mama and dad; daughter, Juanita; grandson, Dennis; great-great grandson, Trey; sisters, Kata and Sally; and brothers, Mundy and Neto.
Services for Copper will be on Thursday, March 19, 2015 with visitation at 9:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament in Miami, Rosary at 9:30 and Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m.
Internment will take place at the Mt. Breeze Memorial Gardens in Miami immediately following the Mass, with the reception to follow at Lady’s Center in Miami.
