Dewey Edward Lewis was born in Sherman, Texas on Aug. 14, 1920 to his father Harley Lewis and his mother Maggie Hunter.
His mother died when he was four years old and Ed had a difficult upbringing - working as a child to support his family. Because of this, he was never able to finish his education - though he earned his GED equivalent in 1967.
He joined the U.S. Army in 1941 and eventually served with Patton's 5th Armored Division in Europe. In late November 1944, he was wounded by sniper fire while assisting a medic with a wounded soldier near Nancy, France. When medical aid was reached, it was discovered he also had severe frostbite damage to both feet. After receiving medical treatment for three months in England, he returned to duty in Germany until World War II ended.
He later learned that, while he was in the hospital, the Battle of the Bulge occurred and only 47 of the 200 men in his company survived. He was awarded a Purple Heart and other awards for his service. He served his country again, this time stateside, during the Korean Conflict.
He married Dorthey on Nov. 5, 1945 - beginning what would be 69 years of marriage. They were blessed by two children, Dan and Darrel.
Ed worked with his father-in-law in their family-owned plumbing company for 16 years. Following that he began a long 24-year career as a Resident Engineer for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and then the Veterans Administration, overseeing the construction of schools, hospitals, and other facilities all across the country - including Hawaii.
After retiring and moving to northern Arizona, he joined the volunteers at the Prescott VA Medical Center - serving 750 hours before being physically unable to continue.
Ed surrendered his life to Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday in 1946 - serving faithfully in Southern Baptist churches since that time. He sang in the choir, sang solos and was even the deep bass voice for the Lewis Family Quartet - whether singing in church or just around the house. He directed musical worship as needed and was a deacon for 55 years. He was elected Deacon Emeritus at First Southern Baptist Church in Prescott Valley.
Ed went on to be with his Lord on March 17, 2015 in the Northern Arizona VA Hospice facility in Prescott, Arizona. He is survived by his wife, Dorthey; his children Dan and Darrel; and his grandchildren Mark, Jeff, Deborah and Jon.
