Dead and Buried -
Sion Bradley - not Bradley Sion as we had it in last week's issue of the Miner - is dead and buried.
His death resulted from pistol shot wounds inflicted upon him by Hiram Lightner, in the Diana Saloon, Prescott, on Wednesday evening, June 29. He lingered until about one o'clock on the night of the 5th inst., when his spirit took its flight to the unknown world beyond the tomb. Wednesday last, his remains were conveyed to the citizens' burying-ground, and there deposited. A goodly number of people followed the remains to the grave, among whom were many whose hearts were heavy with grief.
Deceased came to this town from the northern country, several months ago. He was believed a native of Crawford county, Missouri, where his mother and sister now reside. A cousin of his now resided at White Pine, Nevada.
He had been on this coast for a number of years, during which time he followed gambling and horse-racing, for a living.
He had a reputation of being an honorable, upright sport, and of begin the best pistol shot on the Pacific Coast.
Drunkenness was his besetting sin, and to it, more than anything else, must be attributed to his untimely taking off, while yet young and vigorous, for he was not much, if any, over forty years of age.
His suffering couch was watched by loving friends, and all that medical skill could do was done for him, but all to no purpose. His fate should be a warning to other men who are following the same course of life - gambling and drinking - for, sooner or later, it will lead them into trouble.
Lightner, the man who shot Bradley, gave himself up to the Sheriff on the morning of the fourth, and is now occupying a cell in the county jail. As he will, we hope, undergo examination and trial, a strict sense of our duty as a journalist forbids us to say aught against him.
Therefore, we wash our hands of the affair, with the wish that justice be done, though the heavens fall.
Transcriber's note: Mr. Bradley is buried in an unmarked grave at the Citizens Cemetery in Prescott, Arizona.
