Doris Mae Snell
Our sweet mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, 94, died peacefully on April 19, 2015, from complications of a stroke.
Born in Sallyards, Kansas, on Jan. 3, 1921 to Lida Jay and Adelbert Lewis, sister Virginia and half-brothers Russell and Raymond, she grew up in El Dorado, Kansas where she fell head over heels in love with "her man," Gerald Snell.
Married June 1, 1938, they, along with Jerry's mother, transferred every few years with the FBI, finally settling in Phoenix in 1954. They were blessed with four children along the way, Bill Snell (Jan), Becky Cowart (Hal), Sharon Neldon (Mike) and Bobbie Wall (Scott). She joked that each time they transferred they had another baby! Doris' total love and devotion to her family was exemplified by the care and beauty she always brought to everything.
She delighted in her 11 grandkids and 21 greats, with another due soon! Doris and Jerry enjoyed retirement in the home he built for them in Prescott. Continuing a busy life after Jerry's death in 1982, Doris married longtime friend Howard Hinson and she happily welcomed his four children to her family.
Doris loved to relate stories, entertain in her home and flirt! She was an avid bridge player and was devoted to the PEO Sisterhood. Doris never met a stranger and happily gave her beautiful smile to all. Loved by her entire family, she gratefully proclaimed that "she had a wonderful life!"
A celebration of her life will take place on June 6, 2015, in San Diego.
