Norvel Owens Mortuary, Flagstaff, Arizona Joe "Chema" Almarez (October 28, 1925 - May 26, 2015) Joe Almarez, “Chema”, born October 28, 1925, passed to rest May 26, 2015. Mr. Almarez was a Flagstaff native for over 85 years. Mr. Almarez is survived by nine children: Socorro Mendez, Christina Mendez, Margaret Perez, Louis Almarez, Dolores Almarez, Anna Botello, Anthony Almarez, Theresa Almarez, and Salvador Almaraz; four sons-in-law: Richard Mendez, Manual Mendez, Andy Perez, and Charlie Botello; and two daughters-in-law: Debra Almaraz and Christine Almaraz. Mr. Almarez is also survived by 23 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren – a five generation family. Mr. Joe Almarez was a World War II veteran, stationed in Germany and marched with the 71st infantry. Mr. Almarez was a well-known Flagstaff native. He was an architect, builder and designer-in our eyes- of many homes. He was a builder for many residents in the Flagstaff area, an electrician, blue print designer, and a jack of all trades. Chema enjoyed his life here in Flagstaff with his beautiful wife of 47 years, Consuelo Almarez, and his large, beautiful family. Mr. Almarez’s hobbies included: prospecting, fishing, days spent at the surrounding lakes, the beauty of the San Francisco Peaks, his walks and hikes in the fresh pines and his casino trips. Chema was known by many and will be sincerely missed by all! Holy Rosary take place Sunday, May 31, 2015 at 7:00 pm at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 224 S. Kendrick Street, Flagstaff, Arizona. Funeral Mass will be Monday, June 1, 2015 at 10:00 am, also at our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
