Death Summons Comes to Good Woman
Mrs. John F. Mahony, Pioneer Resided During Perilous Days, Is Called Away
Another beloved pioneer woman of Arizona, in Mrs. John F. Mahoney, has been called away, her death taking place Sunday evening at about 5:30 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jesse Crose, on Virginia street, where she was taken a few days previous when her illness was considered alarming.
The death of Mrs. Mahoney will occasion deep regret in and out of pioneer circles of Arizona. She braved the perils of Indian days, was a faithful wife and a beautiful mother. Gifted with a generosity characteristic of border day life, this woman also courageously struggled and triumphed in making the home a haven and in succoring those to whom she was entrusted with a mother's duty that was fearlessly and sacredly followed from beginning to end. She had been a resident of Prescott for over 40 years, and of this section since 1870. She was a resident of Wickenburg with her husband, a respected pioneer who survives, when the horrible Wickenburg Indian massacre of 1872, shocked the nation. Those who recall that gloomy era freely extend the tribute to Mrs. Mahoney and other noble women of that day that they were firm, resolute and sacrificing in their benevolence to all, and above everything else faced dangers with a strong hand and warm heart on any occasion.
Aside from the beautiful life in Arizona, this good woman enjoyed, her death discloses a pretty little romance of girlhood days. In crossing the Atlantic, while in her 'teens' she first met her husband, John F. Mahoney. A few days' acquaintance ripened the love, and the deep and sincere affection each bore for the other, a short time afterward was commenced in wedlock. Both have traveled the long trail of wedded life happily and affectionately and now after his helpmate is called away at the age of 69 years, the sturdy pioneer can only say 'the one who goes is happier than the one who is left behind.'
Mrs. Mahoney will be laid away in I.O.O.F. cemetery on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock when her son-in-law, W. H. Poulson, will perform a sad duty of laying away the good soul.
She is a native of Ireland, and is survived by her husband, and three daughters, Mrs. Jesse Crose, Mrs. Don Keyer (sic), and Mrs. W. M. Poulson.
The funeral will take place from the old Mahoney home, on Aubrey street.
