Mildred Grace (Millie) Atwell peacefully passed from this world on June 16, 2015 after a long and magnificent life.
Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on Nov. 25, 1928, she was one of two children and the only daughter of Merrill Davis Muttart and Gladys Edith (Bowling) Muttart.
She attended school in Edmonton and graduated from the Ontario Ladies College. An outstanding swimmer in her youth she was an accomplished lifeguard who saved the lives of several people, receiving a medal from the Royal Lifesaving Society for her actions.
She is survived by her three children, Merrill Mildon, Lloyd Mildon and Alan Mildon; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and her brother Merrill Muttart.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 18 years, Lt. Col. Roy Atwell, USAF, who died in 1991. Mildred was divorced in 1973 from her first husband, Ted Mildon of Edmonton, Canada, but they remained friends until his passing in 2002.
In the late 1960s, Mildred's always-adventurous spirit prompted her to travel to Germany for several years. It was there she met and married Roy Atwell and they moved to Arizona in 1975, initially settling in the Valley. Mildred and Roy were thrilled to move to Prescott in 1988, a community they both loved.
She was known as "Millie" to her wide circle of friends and was active in several theatrical productions with the Prescott Fine Arts Association. These stage appearances gave her a chance to indulge her lifelong love of singing. In her later years, she enjoyed traveling and developed a special passion for quilting, a skill she worked hard to master.
A resident for several years of the Las Fuentes retirement home, she was always grateful for the care, companionship and understanding extended to her by the residents and staff.
Mildred's family would like to acknowledge the kind friendship extended to her over the years by Bill Laramie, John Cutting, and Kim and Kenny Smith.
Special thanks are extended to the staff and medical professionals of the Good Samaritan Nursing Home (Prescott Village) in Prescott, under the direction of Dr. Samuel Downing, who worked tirelessly to make her final days comfortable.
The family would especially like to offer their heartfelt thanks to Mary Manzer, RN, John Stevens, EA and Jette Stevens, AZCLDP who provided unfailing service to Mildred over the years. They provided invaluable professional guidance, service and friendship. We will be forever grateful.
At her request, no services will he held. Donations in her memory may be made to the Salvation Army, Prescott Corps, 237 S. Montezuma St., Prescott, AZ 86303.
Hampton Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.
