Wittmann Man Dies in Fire After Driving Truck Into Home
A 34-year-old Wittmann man died last Tuesday of burns after driving his pickup truck into his residence in an incident authorities believe was a suicide.
Sgt. Jay Ellison of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office public information office said Steve Meek died about 6pm, Tuesday, Feb. 23, in the Maricopa County Hospital's burn unit. A spokesperson there said Meek had sustained burns to over 80 percent of his body.
According to sheriff's reports, Meek drove his pickup into the side of his home about 1:50pm. The residence, a modular unit structure, and the truck both caught fire, reports said.
Ellison said a note had been left behind, and that Meek and his wife, Marlene, reportedly were estranged.
The incident is believed to have resulted from that estrangement, Ellison said.
Marlene Meek was not at home when the incident occurred, Ellison said.
The Meek's home was completely destroyed by the fire, according to reports.
