Anthony John Gallo
John Gallo of Prescott, Arizona, died on Sept. 9, 2015, at the age of 97.
John was born the oldest of four children of Charles and Mary Gallo in Lynn, Massachusetts, in 1918. He graduated from Lynn English High School and Burdett College, from which he graduated highest in his class of 1938 and became a member of the Sigma Chi Omega National Honor Society.
On Pearl Harbor Day, he was employed by the Navy Department at the South Boston Naval Yard. He enlisted immediately to the staff of Capt. Abele, Commanding officer in Boston. He later served aboard the U.S.S. Yukon in the European and African campaign. He later went to the Pacific campaign as Chief Petty Officer in charge of seven other chiefs and 105 yeomen. He was assigned to commanding officer staffs throughout his naval career of four years active service and seven years reserve. He was honored by being offered the position of Chief Yeoman for Admiral Chester Nimitz, who shortly thereafter returned to Washington, D.C., to become the Chief of Naval Operations.
John was later employed by the Univar Corp. as claims adjuster and division manager. He was a member of VFW Post No. 541 and served as quartermaster and chaplain. He was also a life member of Prescott Chapter 16 DAV Post. John also served seven years as volunteer member of the Prescott Street Commission.
For recreation and exercise, he enjoyed playing golf two to three times weekly on our local golf courses, mainly Antelope Hills.
He is survived by the Hall family in Prescott, Arizona; a sister in Massachusetts; four nieces and families in Massachusetts; and three grandchildren and families in California.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Barbara "Barbie."
Services will be Saturday, Oct. 3, 2015, at 11 a.m. at the Trinity Presbyterian Church, 630 Park Ave., Prescott. The Hampton Funeral Home is assisting with the arrangements.
