SHUMWAY, Charles Lloyd


The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ 09/22/2015 Charles Lloyd Shumway, 75, died Monday, Sept. 14, 2015, with his Eternal Companion of 52 years, Patty Shumway, at his side. Lifelong resident of Arizona, Charles was born Oct. 27, 1939, to Charles Stanley and Frances Ballard Shumway in Snowflake. He is the brother of Sylvia Hamblin, Myrtle Reed, Katie Udall, Helen Wilkins and Beverly Heap, and the father to Charles Lynn (Tracy) Shumway of Eagar; Darren Ray (Rynda) Shumway of Eagar; Brenda (Kevin) Griggs of Mont.; Nolan Lloyd (Ariane) Shumway of Ind.; Kay Tyler (Alisha) Shumway of San Tan Valley; Michael Stanley Shumway (stillborn), Kristina (Patrick) Felber of Ore.; and a loving grandfather to 23 grandchildren. Charles was the manager of the Francis Day and Sons Concrete Plant. He never knew a stranger. He also drove truck delivering everything from milk to logs. He managed a Texaco station in Springerville and worked at sawmills with his father from a very young age to well into life as a father; never being one to sit still for long. Charles severed a two year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Northern California and served in the High Counsel for the St. Johns Arizona Stake as well as the Eagar Arizona Stake. He served in many callings in the Church from primary and scouts and later became the Bishop of the Eagar 1st Ward. He loved the time he spent serving the Lord. Charles spent his spare time being a honorary grandfather to many; building a swing float for the Fourth of July parade in Round Valley and building an awesome cabin for the Shumway family in Luna, New Mexico. He and Grandma “McGyver” built their family home in Eagar. He loved singing in choirs and barbershop quartets and was fond of trains and old trucks. Aviewing will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, at Burnham Mortuary. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Eagar Stake Center, with visitation beginning at 8:30 a.m. Interment will follow the services at the Eagar Cemetery.
