Dr. John W. Grigg passed away surrounded by family on October 5th. Dr. Grigg was born in Munger, Michigan on March 7th, 1927 to the late Roy Grigg and Marie Rudell.
"Jack" as he was affectionately known to all those while growing up in Munger graduated from Bay City Central High School. After graduating from high school at the age of 17, in 1944, John enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was a corpsman assigned with a U.S. Marine demolition unit until discharge in 1948. It was as a corpsman John found his professional true love in medicine.
Using the GI Bill to pursue medicine, John attended Bay City Junior College, the University of Michigan and was admitted into Wayne State University School of Medicine after three years of college. Dr. Grigg graduated in 1955 and also married the love of his life, the former Marilyn Cochrun, from Carson City, MI. Upon receiving his MD degree, Dr. Grigg was in general practice two years before going to receive specialty training in Octolaryngology at Harper Hospital in Detroit, MI. Dr. Grigg practiced nose and throat medicine for nearly 30 years in Bay City.
Dr. Grigg enjoyed learning and was always up for a challenge and this led him to take a break from medicine in 1982 to pursue his law degree, graduating from Thomas M Cooley law school in 1985. At that time he was one of only a handful of professionals in the country that attained an MD and JD degree. Dr. Grigg practiced private practice law and also with the law firm Seward, Tally and Piggott in Bay City, specializing in medical malpractice law. Dr. Grigg practiced both law and medicine simultaneously until his full retirement in 2000.
Dr. Grigg enjoyed life to the fullest and lived a life most people only dream of. One of the hobbies he and Marilyn enjoyed was world traveling. They traveled extensively in the Soviet Union, the eastern block of Europe, Scandinavia and Australia. In 1979, he and Marilyn became one of the first Americans allowed to travel throughout China. He detailed their trip through a series of articles he wrote for the Bay City Times.
He and Marilyn took up another hobby together in the 1960's, as they learned to ski. They enjoyed their annual ski trips out to Aspen, CO with their friends and children. Dr. Grigg was an avid scuba diver as well. Many adventurous days were spent diving and hunting shipwrecks in the straits of Mackinaw aboard his boat "The Curious George". He also took up Speed skating at age 55 and won numerous races and meets in the men's Master division throughout the state and Canada.
Dr. Grigg and Marilyn found their "second home" in the 90's spending the winter in Wickenburg, AZ with their many friends. They enjoyed building a home there, playing golf, entertaining their children and grandchildren and exploring all parts of Arizona.
Dr. Grigg also shared and taught his expertise and experience to a variety of organizations including Wayne State Medical School Adjunct professor, Fellow American Academy of Fascial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery-1973; Founding member Chairman of American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery-1976-1981; President of the Michigan Otolaryngological Society-1980; the Essexville School Board from 1972 to 1982; Executive Director Michigan Speed Skating Association 1985; and the MSU College of Nursing as an special assistant to the Dean of Nursing.
Dr. Grigg is survived by the love of his life of 60 years, Marilyn, four children: Scott Grigg (Cathy) of Milford, MI, Lisa Muneio of Petoskey, MI, Judy Grigg of Louisville, CO, Christopher Grigg (Melissa)of Essexville, MI, and one brother, Robert Grigg (Joyce) of Bay City.
Dr. Grigg also loved and treasured his six grandchildren very much which he spent his time sharing his wisdom, fishing and being a role model to them all. They include Sandra Greyerbiehl (Matt), Mike Muneio, Rita Grigg, Maria Grigg, Zachary Grigg and Ryan Grigg.
He was predeceased in death by his parents and one brother, Robert Grigg of Munger, MI.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful and loving staff at Sheffield Place for their outstanding care of Dr. Grigg.
As per the wishes of Dr. Grigg, there will be no memorial service. Those wishing to remember Dr. Grigg are encouraged to make a donation to the Veterans Administration Hospital in Ann Arbor, MI.
