Richard Allen Reece Sr., 97, of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away Aug. 23, 2015.
Richard is survived by his sons Richard (Conni) and Chris (Cathy); five grandchildren; and an increasing number of great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 70 years, Dorothy Lillian Kash Reece.
Richard, born in Urbandale, Iowa, was an art and industrial arts teacher and guidance counselor in the Prescott School District for over 20 years. He and his wife lived and worked in Prescott, Arizona before moving to Phoenix, Arizona. Richard had a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Iowa in Iowa City majoring in Art and minoring in English Literature, a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Tampa majoring in Industrial Arts, and a Master of Arts from the University of Florida. He also worked on a Doctorate in Counseling at Northern Arizona University and attended classes at the University of Arizona and Arizona State University.
Richard served in World War II in the United States Army in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and Austria from 1942 to 1945. He rose to the rank of Sergeant and worked as a combat engineer and in engineering intelligence. Prior to the War, Richard worked in Youngstown, Ohio on the plans for the Pentagon. After the War, Richard and Dorothy lived in Tampa, Florida where he worked for the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey until he moved to Arizona to assume the role of the Executive Director for the Grand Canyon Council of the Boys Scouts of America. He was also a member of Gideons International, Lions Club International and Rotary International.
Richard and Dorothy attended First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Tampa, Florida, and were founding members of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Prescott and Foothills Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Glendale, Arizona. Richard was a Godly example of a Christian man, an elder, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and a devoted friend.
A memorial service has been scheduled for 3 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 8, 2015 at the Foothills Christian Church, 3951 West Happy Valley Road, Glendale, Arizona.
