Robert Lee Denis, 91, a longtime podiatrist, real estate investor and owner/operator of Northport Harbor Apartments until 2008, passed away at his home in Prescott, Arizona on Oct. 13, 2015. Denis had lived in Prescott since December 2013.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, Denis was a swimming champion at Samuel J. Tilden High School. After his graduation in 1942, he joined the U.S. Army during World War II. Chosen for the elite Ski Troops, Denis trained at Camp Hale in Colorado as part of the 1st Battalion of the 85th Regiment.
After his honorable discharge in 1944, Denis studied at Ohio State University and lettered in swimming. His team won NCAA and AAU national championships. In 1949, Denis earned a degree from the Long Island University College of Podiatry and practiced at St. John's Hospital in Smithtown, New York on Long Island for more than 30 years. Denis lived in Greenlawn, New York and had a podiatry practice for many years at his home office and then in offices he built in Huntington.
Denis was an avid hunter and fisherman. Along with many game trophies, in 1967 he earned a Boone & Crockett Club medal for shooting an Alaskan Brown Bear with the third largest skull at that time.
He is survived by his son Andrew Denis and his daughter-in-law Toni (Giovanetti) Denis, both of Prescott, Arizona; his niece Natalie Markowitz of Freehold, New York and her sons Richard Stern and Michael Stern of Manalapan, New Jersey and their wives and children.
Hampton Funeral Home and Cremation in Prescott provided cremation services.
