Services at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church in Miami on November 20, 2015 @ 11:00 A.M. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Copper Country News, Globe, AZ, Tuesday, November 24, 2015 Nicholas Joseph Rayes, born on Nov. 4, 1922, in Globe, Ariz. to immigrant parents, Saad and Rose Rayes, passed away on Nov. 9, 2015, in Phoenix, Ariz. Nick served in the U.S. Army in England during WWII. After the war, he returned to Globe, where he and his brother, Louie, re-opened the family grocery store, the Eagle Market. Nick later went into the furniture and floor covering business, with his sister-in-law, Jane Drees, operating Wilson’s Home Center in Miami for more than 30 years. Nick was well known in Globe-Miami for his community service. He served on the Globe School Board, Gila Pueblo College Advisory Committee, La Questa Board and the State of Arizona Foster Care Review Board. He was a founding member of the Eastern Arizona Alcoholic Recovery Center. He was a leader in the Boy Scouts and belonged to numerous service organizations, including Rotary and the Optimist Club. He was active in his church, Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church in Miami, Ariz. and the Gila County Republican Party. He was presented the Golden Service Award for his community service and along with Governor Rose Mofford, was one of the first inductees into the Globe High School Hall of Fame. Nick married his first love, Lois, on Sept. 1, 1949, with whom he shared 25 years of marriage and four children until her death in 1975. Nick married his second love, Betty, on Sept. 3, 1983, with whom he shared 32 wonderful years. Nick regularly wrote articles, published in the local newspaper, about people and events that occurred during his life in Globe. He was motivated by a profound sense of service to his family, customers, employees and community. His kind and gentle spirit has touched many. Even though he is gone, his example continues to influence and inspire those who have known him. Nick is survived by his devoted and attentive wife, Betty; and four children; Louie (Cathy) Douglas (Sheri), Emily (Bill) and Neil (Roxanne). He leaves 15 adoring grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Visitation was held on Friday, Nov. 20, 2015 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Miami, Ariz., followed by Rosary at 10:30 a.m. and Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. A reception followed at the church’s Fellowship Hall.
