The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona, Sunday, December 06, 2015 William P. Chewning (Bill), 92 a long time resident of Arizona passed away Nov. 28, 2015 surrounded by family. Bill was born in Dubuque, Iowa on April 5, 1923. Bill enlisted in the Navy Aug. 13, 1941 and served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters surviving two ship sinkings, within 24 hours during the North African Invasion. Bill moved to Tucson after the war in 1945. He joined the Tucson Police department in 1947 and then joined the Arizona Highway Patrol in 1953, retiring as Lieutenant Dist. Commander in Prescott in 1978. Bill was a member of the NRA, American Legion, AZ Highway Patrol Association, Coalition of DPS Retirees. Bill enjoyed a good long life of traveling, hunting and fishing. Bill is survived by his wife of 66 years Louise; two children, Gene (Sirkke) Chewning of Tucson, Judy Nestora of Prescott; a brother Milton of Florida; six grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews; and extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his daughter Cindy. A Celebration of Life will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015 at the Hassayampa Inn - Marina Room, 122 E. Gurley St., Prescott, Arizona.
