Mrs. F. S. Breen Dies At Winter Residence Here
Wife Of Flagstaff Editor Succumbs After Six Months' Illness
Mrs. Carolyn E. Breen, 58, wife of Col. Fred S. Breen of Flagstaff and one of the best known and most beloved women of Northern Arizona, died at the Breen winter home here, 701 West Latham street, at 2:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon.
Death followed an illness of six months' duration. During all of this period, Mrs. Breen was about save for the final two weeks, and maintained her ever cheering way and happy demeanor, ignorant of the fact that she had but a short time to live.
Her ailment was definitely diagnosed as cancer several months ago, after a visit to the famed Mayo Brothers Sanitarium at Rochester, Minn. had failed to benefit her to any great extent. But Mrs. Breen never was advised of the nature of her illness.
Instead, she believed she was suffering from some minor stomach disorder and it was on the pretense that a change of climate would materially improve her health that she was induced to come with Colonel Breen to Phoenix for the winter months.
Came Here in January
The Breens took up their residence here late in January and though Mrs. Breen was treated daily, she gradually grew weaker. Two weeks ago she was obliged to take to her bed, death following yesterday afternoon.
Colonel Breen, who has constantly attended Mrs. Breen through all of her illness, is suffering from strain and shock, though his condition was somewhat improved yesterday. He was confined for a week, but left his bed last Monday to assist in the care of Mrs. Breen.
A resident of Flagstaff for more than 20 years, Mrs. Breen had endeared herself to legions of friends and acquaintances throughout Arizona and neighboring states.
She came to Arizona nearly 30 years ago as an educator and continued her chosen profession in this state at both Prescott and Flagstaff.
It was at the latter place that Colonel Breen, at that time a Flagstaff merchant, met and married her in 1906. At the time of the marriage, Mrs. Breen was superintendent of Flagstaff schools.
Native Of New York
Mrs. Breen was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Hopkins, both deceased. She was a native of New York state, where she obtained her common school and college education.
In her young womanhood, she removed with her mother to Nebraska, where she taught for some time prior to continuing west to Las Vegas, Nevada. There she also continued her teaching profession.
She came to Prescott in the early 1900 period, later moving to Flagstaff.
In the years of her early married life, Mrs. Breen was active in club and social affairs and served as the first president of the Flagstaff Woman's club. In recent years, however, she has devoted herself more to the pursuance of things nearest and dearest her heart--her husband, children and flowers.
Made World Tour
Five years ago Colonel and Mrs. Breen made a world tour and after their return to Flagstaff late in 1925, Mrs. Breen was less active in club and social affairs than had been her custom before.
Colonel Breen is the publisher of the Coconino Sun and one of the best known citizens of Northern Arizona. He has been a resident of Flagstaff for more than 30 years, moving there as the first representative of the United States forest service in Coconino county.
Colonel Breen became the publisher of the Coconino Sun by purchase in 1908 and has since owned and operated that newspaper, one of the largest and most influential publications of Northern Arizona.
He was a member of the last territorial and first state legislatures of Arizona and served as adjutant general under Defacto Governor Thomas E. Campbell during the trying war period. It was under his direction that the entire draft machinery in Arizona was set up and conducted.
Colonel Breen will accompany the body to Flagstaff tonight. Funeral services will be conducted from the family home there, with burial at Flagstaff, it was announced last evening.
