Abby Elder Winkelmeyer
We celebrate the life and mourn the passing of Abby Elder Winkelmeyer, 87, who passed peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 3, 2016, surrounded by her family.
She grew up and lived most of her life in St. Louis, Missouri. Abby attended Wells College and later Washington University, where she received her MSW. Abby married Robert Winkelmeyer in 1949 and together they raised six children in a home filled with music, wonderful friends, laughter and family. Abby's favorite times with her family were the many camping trips they took, away from telephone and other distractions, exploring the beauty of nature.
After Bob died suddenly in 1989, Abby decided to leave the Midwest and move out to Prescott, where she built her lovely, light-filled house and created a whole new life for herself for the next 25 years. She was active in animal welfare, loved hiking with her dogs and travelled widely in her retirement, taking each grandchild on an adventure when they graduated from college.
Abby adored her children and grandchildren, supported them in following their passions, be they medicine or the arts and reveled in watching them grow into caring, creative people. She was in turn adored as a gracious and generous matriarch. She will be sorely missed but will remain with us always, woven deeply and colorfully into the foundations of who we have become.
A service in celebration of Abby's life will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 2000 Shepherd's Lane in Prescott.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to United Animal Friends, P.O. Box 11133, Prescott, AZ 86304.
