Cremated When His Home Burned
News of the shocking death by burning of William Burhans at Gleason, Cochise county, was received Monday night by his brother-in-law, Newton Morrell, of this city, the telegram stating that the residence occupied by the unfortunate man caught on fire after the owner had retired for the night, and the building had burned to the ground before the grewsome discovery was made.
No particulars were given of the sad affair, other than that Burhans was asleep at the time, and when the remains were recovered they were unrecognizable.
The cause of the fire was not known, but it is believed to have been due to sparks from a stove in the room adjoining where the body was found. The building was of frame construction, and it is the supposition Burhans was caught asleep and when overcome by smoke was powerless to make his escape.
Mrs. Burhans was in Prescott to receive the sad news, returning only a few days ago from the coast with her mother and other relatives here and was to have left for Gleason in a short time to join her husband.
The deceased was well and popularly known in this county and was a mechanical engineer by occupation. He left Prescott last September and at the time of his death was in charge of a compressor of a copper mining company. He was aged about 33 years and had resided in this county for many years, enjoying a splendid name for his industry and capability in any line he followed.
Mrs. Burhans will forego returning to Gleason as it was deemed advisable to have the burial take place immediately, owing to the condition of the remains.
Transcriber's note: His exact place of burial is not known.
