| Melvin R. Covington, 81, of Scottsdale, AZ, passed away Monday, December 4, 2006. Born in Prescott, AZ and a Scottsdale native. His family came to the valley in 1910. He and his grandfather planted the Arcadia citrus groves. Mel was a graduate of the first class of North Phoenix High and attended Phoenix College and Creighton University in Nebraska. He was proud to serve in the Army Air Corp during WWII. Mel was also the owner of Scottsdale Plumbing for 60 years. He was a founding member of the Scottsdale JC's and instrumental in building the Scottsdale Boys and Girls club and many other Scottsdale buildings. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and most recently gardening. He was also a long time member of the Elks Club and the American Legion. Mel volunteered as a Boy Scout Leader and was involved with the Little League as coach and President. Mel was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather and is survived by his son Michael and his son Dylan; daughter Linda Barnett and her children Nicole and Steven; and son Ed and his children Kelly Covington and Emily Hein and great-granddaughter Brianna Hein. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Alyce. A graveside service will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 9 at Paradise Memorial Gardens, 9300 E. Shea Blvd. Scottsdale. A Celebration of Life will be held immediately following the graveside service at the American Legion Post 44, 7145 E. 2nd St., Scottsdale, AZ 85251. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Post 44.
